Program Council: We Love Beyond Belief
Our fall Program Council meeting will be held on Saturday, September 15 from 8:30 to 3 p.m. in Unity House. The meeting is open to both members who participate in congregational leadership and all interested in participating in a workshop titled We Love Beyond Belief facilitated by Rev. Dr. Thandeka, a highly influential Unitarian Universalist theologian, educator, and visionary. Through experiential exercises, Thandeka will help us explore our distinctive Unitarian Universalist theology of personal experience and how this relates to our experiences in religious community. This opportunity shall equip leaders with greater sensitivity to how worship and congregational life activities can be developed to address the emotional needs of newcomers and long-time members alike. Thanks to a $5,000 grant from the O. Darwin and Myra N Smith Fund, we are bringing Thandeka twice this fall and twice in the spring. As scholar, theologian, ordained minister, and journalist, Thandeka's work investigates the links between religion and emotions. She holds her Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion and Theology from Claremont Graduate University and is the author of several books. Thandeka has taught at Meadville Lombard Theological School, Williams College, Harvard Divinity School, and Brandeis University, and has been a Fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center at Stanford University and a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Process Studies at Claremont School of Theology in Claremont California and Union Theological Seminary in New York City.
