Crossing Borders Music Collective presents "Celebrating Resilience: Music from the Unvanquished Baha'i University of Iran"
Live music by composers and performers who received their musical training at the Baha'i Institute for Higher Education (BIHE). The BIHE is a unique, grassroots university created to provide education to followers of the Baha'i Faith in Iran, who have been systematically denied access to education and employment, and have been attacked, arbitrarily imprisoned and even killed, solely for their beliefs. In the face of this persecution, Baha'i musicians and composers, like many other Baha'i students, traveled sometimes for 12 hours or longer to attend classes held in living rooms taught by BIHE professors, both Baha'i and Muslim, who risked raids and imprisonment. The event will be a first-ever celebration of the resilient journeys of these young composers and performers and will share their music, rich in both Western and Persian influences.
The selections will be followed by excerpts of "Education Under Fire," a documentary presenting a first-hand look at the denial of education to Baha'is in Iran, produced in collaboration with Amnesty International. Musicians will also share their personal stories of perseverance and resilience in the face of oppression.
