Collections for Immigrant Detainees

Each Sunday we read a list of the countries of immigrant detainees held at the McHenry Co. Prison from the Book of the Prayers of the People. In Chicago, an interfaith coalition supports both a women/children and men’s shelter, which house about 30 detainees. These immigrant brothers and sisters, who are currently studying English, are caught in the broken immigration system. It can take a few months for their detention cases to be finalized.

To support them, the Immigration Action Team is collecting: winter boots for men, women and children; magazines (not books) for children, teens, and adults for English Language Learners —Newsweek, Time, Sports Illustrated, Family Circle, National Geographic – Kids, Seventeen, etc.; regular-size toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste, etc.); Ventra cards - $20 for public transportation.

On Dec. 7 and 14, we’ll have a table set up during Coffee Hour to drop your items before services. If you are moved to join in our work, please contact Marcia Sezer at immigration@unitytemple.org.
